When traveling, there are certain things to know that will make the trip more enjoyable and safer. Unfortunately, since 09/11, the world of travel as we once knew it has changed. Therefore, it is important to know what to expect, whether traveling in the United States or overseas. Additionally, you will need to know what to bring. Although this will vary depending on the destination choice, we can provide you with some basics.
For starters, some destinations will require a passport and/or Visa. For the passport, this would be needed if you plan to go overseas as you reenter the United States . If you have a passport already, then always make sure the expiration date on your passport is not due to expire. If you have never applied for a passport before, you will want to do this right away in that it typically takes 30 to 60 days to process. For your Visa, this too takes up to 60 days to process and can be purchased at your local post office, although you will need to have a black and white photo taken, which can be done at drug stores, retail stores, and even some grocery stores.
Additionally, depending on where you plan to go, you should check for any safety advisories. Again, with heightened states of caution, warnings will come and go so make sure you understand the various levels and when traveling would be too risky. You also want to know the climate where you will be going, some things about the cultural so you do not offend anyone with western actions, emergency numbers for your travel agent, the name, address, and phone number of your hotel accommodations, any car rental or train information, and so on.
Basically, when traveling both domestically and internationally, the more you can know the more successful your trip will be. Even taking time to learn words in the local language such as police, hospital, fire, help, restaurant, and taxi can make life easier. The key is being prepared, which requires good planning. If you are unsure of something pertaining to the destination, you can either research on the internet or talk to the person planning your trip.
As far as things you should bring, this again depends on where you are going. Again, you need to take your passport and/or Visa, any medication information and medication, emergency contact information, calling cards or cell phone, and other important items. From there, let us say you would be traveling to Barbados for some fun in the sun. Obviously, you need your swimsuit, hat, suntan lotion, sandals, and things for the water and beach.
On the other hand, if you will be traveling to the mountains of China for hiking, good walking shoes are imperative, for skiing in the French Alps, lots of warm clothing, and then for a romantic weekend in Paris, you want evening attire. The items you take should be comfortable and logical. In addition, always make sure you leave enough room in your suitcase for bringing back treasures from your travels.
